Common SEO Myths Deboonked: A Veteran’s Perspective
In an industry that moves as fast as search, it is easy for outdated advice to be passed around as "gospel." Over my 22 years in SEO, I have seen many tactics come and go. The most important rule is, "INFORM YOUR CUSTOMERS". Don't let myths about how SEO works hold your site back from high ranks for relevant search queries.
As your "gentle educator," my goal is to clear the noise so you can focus on the actions that actually move the needle for your business. I invite you to read the myths below & how I "deboonk" them.
Myth 1: The "Keyword Density" Rule
The Myth: "If I mention my target keyword exactly 5 times (or at a 3.5% density), Google will rank me higher."
The Truth: Search engines are far more sophisticated than they were in 2005. They use natural language processing to understand the intent and readability of your page.
- The Veteran's View: If your attempt to "hit a keyword goal" ruins the flow of your writing, you are hurting your SEO. Google prioritizes pages that users actually want to read. Don't count the number of words in your content, and then make sure that your target keyword is some exact percentage of the words. Do, always, write for your customers first; the search engines will follow. Write content that is accurate and descriptive. Choose your target keyword carefully and include it in the page's title tag and in the content, but always write for the human being who will visit your site.
Myth 2: The "Magic Bullet" Strategy
The Myth: "There is one secret trick or technical 'hack' that will put me at the top of Page 1 overnight."
The Truth: Effective SEO is never about a single magic bullet. It is the cumulative effect of a dozen different factors working in harmony.
- The Veteran's View: Success comes from applying consistent strategies that showcase your value to search engines while simultaneously appealing to your visitors. SEO is a marathon of good decisions, not a single sprint.
Myth 3: "SEO is Dead" (Because of AI / Amazon / Social / Whatever)
The Myth: "People don't use search anymore because they have ChatGPT (or Amazon, or TikTok), so SEO is a waste of time."
The Truth: People have been declaring "SEO is dead" every few years since the early 2000s. While how we search changes, the need for search remains a fundamental part of the human internet experience.
- The Veteran's View: Whether a user asks a traditional search engine or an AI assistant, they are looking for a solution. Business owners will always need to understand how to make their service "findable." Search is fundamental to the internet experience, because the internet has trillions of pages and you have to start somewhere. "SEO" is the most popular name for how we can make things findable on the internet, and SEO will live on.
Myth 4: Rankings are the Only Metric that Matters
The Myth: "If I'm #1 for my favorite keyword, my marketing is successful."
The Truth: Metrics have changed over the decades. We’ve moved from Rankings to Domain Authority, then to Impressions, and then to Keyword Visibility. All of these are "vanity metrics" if they don't lead to a transaction.
- The Veteran's View: The real metric that matters is: What do you want your customers to do? SEO is a vital part of your marketing funnel, but its ultimate job is to get people to take action—whether that’s calling you, buying a product, or signing up for a newsletter.
