Content Clusters and SEO for an Education-Focused Website

Search Engine Optimization is constantly changing and growing. As you've noticed, Google includes "AI Overviews" of topics in the search page to inform their users about specific topics, and as a result, fewer people are clicking through to web sites. Users of ChatGPT, Gemini and other Large Language Models are entering into dialogs to get information.

Read on to learn how I helped a career training school optimize its website for this new era of search.

Client: A Career Training School for High School and Adult Students

Sector: Career & Technical Education (CTE)

Strategy: Content Clustering & High-Intent UX Optimization

The Challenge: Visibility Without Velocity

This client was a provider of career training with a need to improve visibility around local search. However, like many educational institutions, their original content strategy was "Course-Centric." They ranked well for specific course titles, but they were missing the broader search intent of students looking for career outcomes. In other words, I wanted to try optimizing for people who wanted a career in auto repair, as well as people who wanted to take courses in auto repair.

The Strategy: From "Course Titles" to "Concept Clusters"

This search tactic is called "Concept Clusters", and it involves creating pages focused on the student's end goal: the career.

Intent-based Content Clusters

Instead of just optimizing for "Automotive Technology Course," I created pages with information about strongly related concepts:

  • High-paying trade careers in Arizona.
  • Certifications required for mechanics.
  • Finding a job in auto repair after graduating.

Plus Technical SEO

Alongside of content clustering, I implemented many technical SEO fixes on the site, such as

  • Optimizing their Google Business Profile pages for each campus
  • Changing the site's images to "WebP" format to improve the page speed (and the user experience)
  • Added local business schema so search engines knew exactly where each campus was located, further improving its visibility to local-intent searches like "Trade School Near Me"
  • Linked "Career Goal" pages specifically to "Course" pages

I also streamlined the site’s architecture to ensure that every educational content page had a clear, friction-free path to the primary "Key Event": the Enrollment Application.

Why These Numbers Matter

While a 10% growth in traffic is a healthy indicator of brand awareness, the 476% increase in conversions is the real headline. The conversions meant that we were getting the right people to come to the site and giving them a clear reason to take action.

Below is a screenshot of a Google Analytics report that shows the year over year Key Event performance for all search marketing channels. Note that organic search outperformed all other search channels in 2025. To me, this underlines that people trust organic search results, and optimization can uncover good opportunities to grow business.

The "Expert Eye" Takeaway

This project demonstrates a core principle of my 22-year philosophy: SEO is an Art.

By understanding the "Search Intent" of the student (the desire for a career) and fixing the technical hindrances that made enrollment difficult, we transformed a informational website into a high-performance enrollment engine.
